Have you ever wanted to learn about Alpacas? We have the perfect experience for you. Visit to the Chester House Estate and take part in an Alpaca Husbandry Workshop led by Easton Way Farm.
In the alpaca husbandry workshop, you will learn all things about alpacas! Firstly, you will start off with a quiz to see how much you already know and then we will share a few fun facts about alpacas before we fully start the theory session.
We will look at the biological data of alpacas, history of alpacas, where alpacas originated from and alpaca breeds. We will then take a close look at an alpaca’s fleece and identify all the different colour varieties.
We will then move on to looking at how alpacas communicate, general behaviour of alpacas and the husbandry requirements of keeping alpacas such as feeding, health checking, feet trimming, shearing, handling, haltering, mating, and birthing etc.
After a short pause we will then start the practical activities with the alpacas. We must cover the health and safety elements of working with alpacas first but then you will be able to put all the theory you have learnt in to practice! You will be able to feed, handle, feet trim and interact with the alpacas.
You will place a head collar on an alpaca and perform a health check and then you will finish off by taking an alpaca for a small walk. There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos.
The alpacas are intelligent, inquisitive, and interactive. They are non-threatening, kind and gentle natured. Some of them even like to give out a few kisses!
