The Weird and Wonderful Romans at Priors Hall Vol. 2 by Paddy Lambert, Oxford Archaeology East.

Back in 2019, a team from Oxford Archaeology East at Priors Hall, Corby discovered the exciting and rare remains of a Romano-British temple-mausoleum associated with an early Roman villa. Later, it and the landscape around it was spectacularly transformed into a thriving manufacturing centre. Its abundance of kilns produced huge quantities of tiles, brick, pottery vessels and lime mortar.

Yet, these spectacular remains only covered a small part of a Roman villa estate, the remains of which were located 200m to the east of the site.

It was clear that there was much more to discover. What was happening on the eastern side of the villa?  Combined with the fantastic discoveries we made in 2019, what could more excavation tell us about the life of the Romano-British people who lived there, 2000 years ago?

We returned in 2021 to find out. This talk details the wonderful and weird discoveries we made along the way, from Iron Age villages to Roman roads, that tell the story of a Roman villa from the outside looking in.
