Ancient Textiles: An Introduction to Flax Linen, cordage-making and spinning with the Prehistoric Workshop:
Join The Prehistoric Workshop for a 2.5 hour session introducing you to flax linen, one of the most ancient textiles. You process your own bunch of dried flax using stone tools, and transform it into silky fibres ready for spinning. We explore the different methods of spinning flax yarn and cordage-making, from “on-the-leg” to using Stone Age replica spindles. We look at a warp-weighted loom, and appreciate the ancient and unchanging methods that puts clothes on our backs! As well as hearing about the ancient history of flax, you go home with your raw and spun fibres, an appreciation of modern textiles, and the knowledge of how to make your own yarn and cordage.
All safety equipment, materials and expert guidance is provided. This session is suitable for all abilities. Children over the age of 8 can book but must be accompanied by an adult who has also booked a ticket. Closed/robust shoes should be worn, and a mask is recommended for the first part of the activity. Please do not bring dogs to the session.
